10 To Watch: Joanne P. McCallie

“How do you envision us getting over this edge to win a national championship?”

Abby and Emily Waner have only 30 minutes to interview the coaching candidate, so they waste little time before asking the question, the one that will determine whether they endorse Joanne P. McCallie to be Duke’s fourth women’s basketball coach.

“We’re not looking to rebuild. We’re only going forward. Because we don’t have time. Nobody on this team has time.”

The Michigan State coach puts down her pen and pad to look the sisters in the eyes, just as she’s done since her high school coach criticized her for watching the floor during timeouts. Then McCallie fires back the answer, the one that addresses but quickly suppresses the two torturous postseason losses that have come to haunt Duke Women’s Basketball.

She will win, she says, because she’s not interested in the program’s past.
